A single brain coral in Blue Bay is estimated at roughly 1,000 years old — older than the island's first recorded human landfall by several centuries.
The lagoon sits at the south-eastern tip of Mauritius, near Mahébourg, sheltered behind a barrier reef that breaks the Indian Ocean swell before it reaches shore. In 1997 the Mauritian government designated 353 hectares of this water a Marine Protected Area, and in 2000 it was gazetted formally as Blue Bay Marine Park. The boundaries enclose one of the few coral assemblages on the island's coast that survived the bleaching events of the late twentieth century largely intact. Around 50 coral species have been recorded inside the park, alongside some 72 species of fish. Anchoring is restricted. Motorised watersports are excluded from the core conservation zone. The rules exist because the reef here is not ornamental — it is the reason the bay is calm.
An excursion snorkeling blue bay itinerary follows a geography that is unusually legible from the surface. Depths across most of the lagoon run between two and six metres, and visibility on a settled morning can exceed fifteen. The seagrass beds nearer the beach give way to sand channels, then to the coral garden proper: staghorn thickets, plate corals, and the massive Porites domes that give the site its reputation. Sergeant majors, parrotfish, damselfish and the occasional green turtle move through it. Glass-bottom boats have worked these waters since long before the park existed, and remain the standard way to read the reef for anyone who prefers to stay dry.
Context matters to what visitors see today. Mauritius lost significant reef cover elsewhere to sedimentation, coastal construction and warming water; Blue Bay's protected status has slowed, not stopped, that pressure. Researchers monitor the site regularly, and the coral gardens are among the most studied on the island. The filao trees along the public beach were planted as a windbreak and now shade the sand. Ile aux Aigrettes lies a short distance north — a coral islet nature reserve run as a conservation project — while the Mahébourg waterfront and its Naval Museum sit within a few kilometres.
That combination is why excursion snorkeling blue bay remains the anchor activity of the south-east coast: a protected lagoon, a living reef of measurable age, and an ecosystem that still rewards close looking.
